InspirationThe Benefits of Consistent Lighting

July 25, 2020by Radiant Blinds

The repetitive and reliable nature of the rising and setting sun is a miracle of consistency.

This globally consistent light source is not only gorgeous to watch as it rises and sets on the horizon. It is also a source of passion and inspiration, reassuring the human soul that today is a new day, that our problems aren’t so big after all, and that the possibilities are still endless. The sun provides us with a timeline that drives schedules and daily activities, including our sleep cycles.

Studies indicate that inconsistent lighting in the home or workplace can have a deep impact on the physical and mental condition. In a study conducted in Britain and published in “The Responsible Workplace,” it was shown that windows were the number one factor determining an occupants’ level of satisfaction with a building. This is due to the effect lighting has on the human body: directly, by affecting what and how well we are able to see, and indirectly, in the form of effects on our mood, behavior, and even hormonal balance. Consistent lighting has been shown to result in improved worker morale, reduced absenteeism, fewer illnesses, and, because better lighting encourages satisfaction among workers, it also results in increased productivity. So, how do we replicate that life-giving pattern of consistent lighting in our homes and work spaces?

A blend of natural and artificial lighting, tuned to the individual, is best.

In the late 1900’s, music was a more universal experience. People in the same car listened to the same radio and were generally happy sharing their music with everyone via stereo or boom box. Today, the culture has shifted. Music is more individual. Everyone listens to their own music station on their own device with their own headsets or earpods. This paradigm shift is the result of individual interests expressed through supply and demand. Is 4 hours of a specific country music artist at a volume level of “9” good for everyone? Probably not. What is good for the individual isn’t necessarily good for all.

The same goes for lighting.

21st Century lighting will continue to trend more intelligent, and more individual.

Smart Home controls provide a more consistent and individual user experience, responding to our activities and the conditions we live in such as weather and the way we use interior spaces. The key is to introduce a combination of natural light and artificial light that meets the needs of the individual, or individuals, in a space.

This means improving control of light at the source: our windows

Lighting Window Shutters provide new functionality at the window and complete control of the natural & artificial light entering a space. They also insulate interiors from heat or cold, light, and sound while providing a sun-filled window appearance. By adjusting the louvers, or Lumina, sunlight and reflected natural light can be directed into the space. When sunlight is either too bright or unavailable, when it is in poor supply, or when privacy is an issue, lighting shutters can be closed completely and activated to provide ample light to the interior.

Diffused Light
As opposed to direct light, or spot lighting, diffused light evenly distributes light into a space without the glare or concentrated spots produced by many other light sources such as light bulbs and spot lighting. Light producing louvers create light from within which passes into the interior space through the louver’s diffusion layer. Each louver combines with adjacent louvers to create a seamless window full of light. Grouping windows with light producing shutters in rooms, office spaces, or entire buildings allows the individual, family, or team unit to have full control over light entering the interior space from any window, including sunrise and sunset.
